Nothing brings people together like a disaster, right?
Wrong.
America has turned down help from around 30 countries and international organizations. Obama has dismissed miracle cures from Croatia, barges from Sweden, and containment boom from various obscure allies, according to the State Department. Belgium? Denied! Israel? Denied! Qatar? Denied!
The BP catastrophe should be a wake-up call for Americans to be concerned citizens rather than just corporate consumers.
As American revolutionary patriot Tom Paine wrote in 1796, "I care not how affluent some may be, provided that none be miserable in consequence of it."

Rush Limbaugh took to his radio show today to claim that the Gulf oil spill is really no big deal because, "More oil is spilled every year in Africa, in Nigeria, than so far in the Gulf, so it's not unique.
It's not exceptional. It's not the largest...So yes, it's a disaster. It's not the worst of its kind." How much BP stock does Limbaugh own?

Thousands of Americans had to put their dream of Haitian adoption on hold while the Caribbean nation struggles to restore basic services and reunite families separated by the disaster.
With Haiti temporarily closed to new adoptions, some have turned elsewhere, to nations such as Ethiopia, China and Russia.
Ed Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of a House energy committee investigating the oil spill, slammed BP's response to the disaster in an appearance on "Face The Nation" Sunday morning.
He suggested that the oil company has misled the public about the magnitude of the spill, and warned the public not to trust what the company is saying.
