In the end, I did what I set out to do: craft a rig that can play all the latest games, with the latest tech---Sandy Bridge, a current-gen GPU, USB 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s---for under $1,000. I had to make some compromises, but the end result is still a respectable performer. If I could spend an extra $100, I'd swap the 2.93GHz dual-core Core i3-2100 for a $216 3.33GHz quad-core Core i5-2500K.
