HP Will Stay In PC Business

HP Will Stay In PC Business

After leaving the markets hanging for a few weeks, HP has finally clarified its future plans in the PC business: it's in. HP will not undertake the course of action began by former CEO Leo Apotheker to spin off the PC business. This marks the first major change led by new CEO Meg Whitman. Don't get too excited; webOS is still dead .

Analysts, for once, called this one correctly. When looking at the numbers, it would be foolish for HP to cede its current high ranking in PC sales. Google Maps Now Adding Building Interiors

Google announced last May that it intended to begin adding business interiors to Google Maps Street View. Now the first test images are rolling out. Users browsing maps will be invited into shops and offices that make use of the same 360-degree panning view that we're used to with street view. Considering the very different nature of the content, Google has changed the way they acquire these images.

If a business owner is interested in having their interior added to Google Maps, they have to fill out an application online. Google will then contact the applicant to set up a time for a Google photographer to come and capture the business for posterity. If at a later date, the owner or any subsequent owner decides that they do not want the images up, a request can be submitted.

During last weekend's BlizzCon, the titular PC gaming giant unveiled the latest addition to its world of strife, backstabbing, and apocalypse dragons: Pandas. Not so, says Blizzard. Apparently, pandas can be badasses too.

Dropbox Improves Third Party APIs and Beefs Up Security

We've recommended Dropbox to our readers more times than we can count, but with good reason. Recent security issues aside, its still the best file storage / sharing service in town, and that doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon. Dropbox has always had a very robust and flexible set of third party API's, but on Friday the company announced these would be expanding to offer not just more flexibility, but improved security as well.

Its great to see Dropbox finally taking security seriously, but they are still missing a few critical features that prevent us from recommending it as a solution for your sensitive data. Multi-factor authentication and client side encryption aren't just nice to have features for cloud storage these days, its critical for anything you'd like to keep private. Dropbox has openly admitted that each file is scanned and checked against their database for duplicates prior to uploading, and a copy of your encryption key is kept on-hand as a result. This doesn't mean someone at Dropbox HQ is sitting around sifting...

Canonical Announces Extended Support for LTS Releases for Desktop Users

Beginning with the release of Ubuntu 12.04 in April, 2012, Canonical will support LTS releases for desktops users for five years instead of the current three years.

In a statement issued yesterday, Canonical said that the decision to extend support for LTS releases for desktop users was taken in face of Ubuntu's growing popularity among enterprise users used to longer maintenance periods. Previously, only server LTS releases were supported for such a long duration. Mojang Lands First Blow in Scroll Wars Secures Interim Injunction for Trademark

We suppose you really can't teach an Elder Scroll new tricks. We have no idea what we actually mean by that, but it sounds nice enough when you consider that Zenimax hobbled out of the court room with a mean shiner after its first legal tussle with Minecraft creator Mojang. The tooth-and-nail battle over another word for paper is far from over, but Notch and co can now breathe a fair bit easier.

Perhaps Notch was right to be so brazenly overconfident after all. It's almost like he knew this was going to happen -- as though it was foretold by some kind of ancient... parchment. 40 of TabletSmartphone Owners Use It While Watching TV

Odds are good that if you own a tablet or smartphone, you use it while watching TV. A new Nielson survey says that 40% of people with at least one of these devices use it daily while sacked out in front of the TV. Users of eReaders, though, not so much. Only 14% of that group admit to using the device in front of the TV.

To be frank, it's a little surprising that the 40% figure isn't higher. Some content companies are taking note of the trend by releasing companion apps for popular programs and channels. The opportunity to tie in advertising on mobile devices with TV programming will likely push more companies in this direction over time. Do you use a mobile device while watching TV?...

Adobe demos breakthrough Photoshop tech to fix blurry photos

Adobe used one of its sessions at its MAX 2011 event to swing attention away from creative tablet apps towards a new technology that could reduce or sometimes eliminate the blur in photos. A "sneak" of an algorithm for Photoshop can determine what the movements of the camera were when the shutter was open, giving it a way to correct the shot. The test plugin lets users choose to sharpen just a small piece of the photo and optimize it for common needs like text.......

Eureka Ditching DRM Decreases Piracy

A new paper to be published in the upcoming issue of Marketing Science shows that removing DRM from music leads to a decrease in piracy.

Or phrased differently, DRM appears to be an incentive for people to pirate music instead of buying it. The researchers from Rice and Duke University used analytical modelling to come to this seemingly common sense conclusion.

Facebook039s Active Users Dwarf Most Continents039 Total Internet Users

While we were busy listening to all the Spotify coverage at F8 a few weeks back, the Zuck let a little something else slip that we missed at first: Facebook's active user base is now over 800 million strong. Let that number sink in. 800 million. It's utterly massive. How massive? One website crunched the numbers and found that the Facebook of 2011 is as big as the entire Internet of 2004 and a whole host of other things.

Just to play the devil's advocate, we'd like to point out that the Internet usage stats that Royal Pingdom linked to shows that the Web crossed the 800 million mark around October 2004, but we get their point nonetheless. Some other fun bits: Facebook's user base is larger than any continent's Internet population except for Asia's, and Facebook users outnumber the combined population of Russia and all of Europe combined! Plus, Facebook citizens outnumber US citizens 2.5 times over. When you put it that way, Google+'s 30 million-plus users suddenly don't seem quite as impressive......

Kindle Fire Lights Up 95000 PreOrder Sales on First Day

Part for part and with manufacturing costs taken into account, Amazon appears to be losing $10 for every Kindle Fire tablet it sells, according to a build of materials estimate IHS iSuppli put together. The reason Amazon can afford to sell hardware at a loss -- if in fact the mega online retailer really is losing money -- is because it will make up for it in services and sales after the fact. If the numbers are correct, Amazon will have to make up $950,000 just to account for the first day of pre-order sales.

The Kindle Fire still has some ground to make up before it flirts with iPad-like numbers. Back in April 2010, eDataSource figured Apple sold 350,000 iPad devices on the first day, and 300,000 iPad 2 devices on its first day. There's still plenty of time for the Kindle Fire to reach or exceed those kinds of numbers, as it doesn't ship until the middle of November.

DRAM Market Debacle Takes Toll on Micron

DRAM Market Debacle Takes Toll on Micron

Micron this week announced financial results for its fourth fiscal quarter and 2011 fiscal year ended September 1, 2011, and the numbers aren't pretty. The company's revenue from DRAM in the third quarter dropped 12 percent compared to Q3, a slump Micron said was the result of declines in the average selling prices. Revenue from sales of NAND flash products picked up some of the slack and grew 11 percent, but doesn't have enough volume to make up for the downturn in DRAM.

There are a number of reasons why Micron's DRAM business is struggling. The biggest one is a continued oversupply of DRAM chips, a situation Micron warned will negatively affect its margins going forward, Reuters reports. Lower than expected PC sales growth is also playing a role.
