Facebook and Spotify Reportedly Teaming Up to Stream Music to Your Ear

According to our favorite people, "sources close to the deal", Facebook has partnered with Spotify to bring its music streaming service to American shores.

The service will be integrated with the Facebook website right in the news feed. The real kicker here, the service could launch in as little as two weeks. This deal, if accurate, would be huge for both companies. Spotify gets millions more users to prop up their flagging profits. Facebook gets the music streaming service it has been seeking for years, which will nicely compliment their burgeoning movie rental system. Sources claim no money is changing hands in the deal.

Polywell Ignition X5800 Review

Polywell's latest packs a surprise GPUAgainst our current zero-point rig, a Core i7-920 overclocked to 3.5GHz, there's not much of a contest.

The Polywell X5800 roasts the quad-core 920 in everything by double-digit numbers. The closest the zero-point came was in our Adobe Lightroom benchmark, where the Polywell aces it by just 11 percent. Lightroom isn't very multithreaded and is mostly clock-speed dependent. The Polywell is clocked about 13 percent higher, so the 11 percent advantage is about right. In gaming, the GTX 590 easily surpasses the old dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 card by huge margins.

Hellgate, of course, was a lot of things to a lot of people. Overly ambitious to some. Rushed to others. And -- to our own David Murphy -- sort of, like, you know, not good. However, the game's actually been hacking and slashing among the living in South Korea for quite a while now, so with any luck, the extra development time has added a few much-needed layers of polish to the proceedings.

ITC Report China039s Ineffective Piracy Policies Cost Americas Millions of Jobs

In a new report, the International Trade Commission called out China for its rampant piracy problem and "indigenous innovation policies" for costing the U.S. economy up to $48 billion in 2009.

The report also blames China for costing Americans 2.1 million full time jobs that would otherwise be created if China substantially improved its intellectual property rights policies. The ITC report confirms what the software industry has long known: The Chinese practice of ignoring the intellectual property rights of US innovators harms our nation, puts a drag on our economy and siphons jobs away from Americans," said Business Software Alliance President and CEO Robert Holleyman, who testified before the ITC during its investigation. "The report establishes in clear terms that these practices harm every innovative American industry. We look forward to working with the Senate and the ITC to find meaningful and effective ways to preserve the rights of American innovators in international markets."...

13 Technologies That Need An Immediate Upgrade

We've gotten complacent with many of our technological needs, simply putting up with what we have available now, even if it's horribly dated.

In some cases, it's because we're content with what we have, ignoring the thought that something better may actually be within our reach. In other cases, it's because we have no other choice but to get bent over the table by huge corporations who simply want our money and couldn't care less about innovation or forward progress if it means less profits. Other technologies are just so old and so ingrained into our everyday life that weTo make the landlines' case worse, many are built on ancient wiring with some only capable of data transmissions around 14kbps. Considering that nearly everyone owns a cell phone these days, there is a great opportunity to repurpose the archaic landline network and refresh it with fiber optic connections right down to a residential level, and ideally starting with those on the oldest of lines. Even though it's a costly endeavor to upgrade the entire country's infrastructure, companies like Verizon have already started its undertaking, though the rollout will take...

Google Image Search Gets Sorted Out

Google has announced an interesting new feature for Google image search.

Users will now be able to sort image results by subject to better find the picture they are after. This feature has the potential to take a random pile of images, and help users make sense of it all.As the feature rolls out over the next week or so, you will notice that the sidebar has a new "Sort by subject" option. If you click this, your results will be reorganized with headers for the subject of the image. Google used the example of London in their blog post. If a user searches for London, then organizes by subject, they can get all the images of Big Ben in one place, and all the snapshots of Tower Bridge in a separate row.

Ford on the evening of Google I/O's first day showed off a way to use the search engine's new Prediction API for better driving. Research from the car designer would measure a driver's behavior over time and calculate more efficient trips for the future. An electric or hybrid car could ask where the driver is going and optimize the route to make sure the car gets to its destination mostly or solely on electric power, Ford said in one example.......

Nvidia Leads in Discrete Desktop GPU Market Share AMD in Notebook Graphics

According to the latest figures, Nvidia still dominates the discrete desktop GPU market and managed to grab a 59.4 percent share in the first quarter of 2011. That's a good clip higher than AMD, which served 40.6 percent of the discrete desktop GPU market in Q1, and had it not been for AMD's performance in notebook graphics, Nvidia would be sitting way out in front.

On a related side note, Nvidia recently licensed its SLI technology to AMD, and starting with the 990FX, 990X, and 970 chipsets, AMD system builders will finally be able to run multiple Nvidia graphics cards. While all parties stand to gain from this, Nvidia will likely benefit the most, at least in terms of further increasing its discrete desktop GPU market share.

Apple said talking to Nuance for voice recognition in iOS 5

Word of an Apple deal with Nuance may have gained momentum early Saturday as hints have emerged that a deal is underway.

Rather than the previously dismissed buyout, Apple would forge an agreement to bring Nuance's voice recognition system into iOS, most likely iOS 5. While options were open, TechCrunch understood that the determination of Nuance chief Paul Ricci and a high valuation dependent on licenses were likely deterrents to buying Nuance outright.......

How to Hack Your Kinect

When the Kinect first launched last November, gamers were a bit skeptical.

Here was a device with incredible technological potential, and the most impressive game that came out with it was a dance simulator. But first, why do we need middleware? Early Kinect hacks relied entirely on rough-around-the-edges drivers that could extract the raw images and depth maps captured by the Kinect sensor. People were able to make some cool hacks using those data streams, but you had to be familiar with image-processing programming in order to do much of anything. OpenNI, from PrimeSense , is middleware that allows developers easier, more abstracted access to sensor data, without having to do the low-level stuff themselves. It's hardware-agnostic, so OpenNI software will...

How the Police Get Your Phone Records

Every time I receive a call, my cell carrier takes note of the incoming telephone number, the time, date and duration of the conversation, and---because the call is sent through a network of cell towers---my location. As it turns out, I'm also carrying the right kind of smart phone, which means my device itself jots down my spot on the earth, as well.

On top of that, not all cell phone data is created equal. Text messages newer than 180 days? Probable cause and a warrant. Text messages older than 180 days? Relevant and material for an order. What's the difference, you ask? Well, this new fangled cell phone business doesn't come bundled with an updated set of standards, so the government has been forcing twenty first century technologies into a decades-old framework. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986-the year of IBM's first laptop computer-is one of these. Long long ago, checking your email meant that you had to download it. Leaving...

32 Key Stages In The Evolution of the Gaming PC

Gaming PCs today have gotten pretty high-tech.

If you order a custom machine from a boutique PC vendor, you can expect the works: custom cases, water cooling, massive overclocks and a handfull of enormous video cards, to boot. But it wasn't always that way--once upon a time a gaming computer was just a beige box like any other PC, complete with 72 lb CRT monitor and a stock cooler. We got to wondering about when exactly boutique gaming PCs became an excercise in excess, so we did a little research. We've compiled scans of Maximum PC system reviews for the last 13 years, sampled once every 6 months, and put together a gallery. Hit the jump to see how gaming PC's have evolved since 1998, and watch all the bells and whistles appear one by one.

We decided to subject our petite 3D HPTC to the same tests we've been running on HTPC-class machines for the past year. The tests aren't always apples-to-apples comparisons, as the amount of RAM varies and the storage subsystems are different, but they give a good feel for what kind of performance to expect from a given processor/graphics combination.
