EFF Files Amicus Brief to Defend Free Speech on Social Networks

Linus Torvalds Releases Linux 30 Kernel

Linus Torvalds Releases Linux 30 Kernel

Once in a lifetime events don't happen very often -- you could even say they happen once in a lifetime. When one of them sneaks up and bites us in the butt, it tends to be something that sticks with the group consciousness; think the moon landing, Princess Diana's death or the first time you played Doom. Another milestone event landed in our laps last night, though no one but the staunchest of geeks probably noticed it. Yes, the Linux 3.0 kernel is here.

Don't pick it up looking for the next big thing, though. When Linus Torvalds introduced Linux 3.0 RC1 a couple of months ago, he said the name change was more for laffs and a milestone effect in celebration of Linux's 20th anniversary. He stayed true to his word; the new changes are mostly tweaks and technical details, like improving the Btrfs filing system, introducing a new implementation of the Berkeley Packet Filter and allowing Xen hypervisor Dom0 priveleges. No KDE-4 here.

Cool Site of the Week Stolen Camera Finder

While cellphones might be the go-to photographic device for many people these days, Many of us choose to stick with a mission-specific device to capture the moments of our lives. Whether it's a fancy DSLR that cost us more than our first car or a trusty point-and-shoot that simply gets the job done, the investment of time and money that a photographer outs into their camera is substantial enough that seeing it lost or stolen is unthinkable. Should such a crisis ever arise, you can curse the gods of photography for not equipping your shooter with GPS transmitter, or you

Stolen Camera Finder is a site dedicated to--you guessed it--locating stolen cameras. Users are invited to drag and drop a photo taken with their missing camera to the website's interface. Once the image has been uploaded, Stolen Camera Finder will attempt to read the camera serial number information stored in the photograph, matching it against the serial numbers of images found elsewhere online. If you're lucky, a serial number match may lead back to user name or image service account, giving you some vital information to feed to the authorities for investigation....

Sick Of TOR Researchers Unveil Telex A New Proxy Scheme

The porn -- um, "privacy" -- modes in modern browsers do a great job of letting workers browse Facebook under the noses of employers with strict Web policies, but privacy modes don't do squat when a heavy-handed regime blocks access to specific websites. Freedom-loving webizens in freedom-hating countries have long turned to TOR as their onion-routing proxy of choice to get around governmental roadblocks, but researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a new system that could help Iranians and other censored Web users access "immoral" websites like Twitter and CNN.

Of course, the Telex tag couldn't be obvious or those dastardly dictators would just block all communications that contained the rerouting command. The researchers got around that by exploiting the nature of TLS handshakes that are used to transfer encrypted traffic across the Web. If you indicate that you want a Telex redirection, Telex's public key creates a steganographic tag for the traffic and inserts it into the TLS handshake's "nonce," which is normally a random string. To throw off would-be censors, the Telex tag also appears random, but the code would be recognized by the Telex servers.

Anonymous No More US And UK Crack Down On 15 Alleged Members

After months of watching helplessly while Anonymous and LulzSec pulled down our virtual pants and stuck their tongue out at Internet users worldwide, several members of the two groups are now being taught a crucial lesson: nobody likes a smartass. We reported yesterday that the FBI raided the homes of 3 suspected Anons in New York, but it turns out that was just the tip of the iceberg. Authorities in the US and UK say they've slapped the cuffs of 15 alleged Anon affiliates and one person possibly associated with LulzSec. Oh, and one more guy.

One more person was corralled during the roundup: Scott Matthew Arciszewski of San Jose, California, allegedly accessed the servers of Tampa Bay InfraGard, a company associated with the FBI, then uploaded three files onto the company's system. "Arciszewski then tweeted about the intrusion and directed visitors to a separate website containing links with instructions on how to exploit the Tampa InfraGard website," the DoJ says. You may remember that LulzSec took a swipe at InfraGard back in June, but Arciszewki accessed InfraGard two weeks after the other intrusion. *Cough* Moron *Cough*...

Spotify and Our Degraded Music Culture

What I want to know is how is this sustainable for Spotify? The Swedish developers have stressed that keeping the program free, or somewhat free, is crucialbully for them, but who will be compensated and how? Spotify makes its money through ads and premium accounts, but how far can five dollars a month go? The developers will do fine, but what about the artists? Record labels? Netflix Price Hike A Result Of Our Refusal To Give Up Physical Media

Netflix has been facing has been facing a ton of consumer backlash over its recently announced price hikes, and while the company has been fairly tight lipped when it comes to explaining why it was necessary, the Associated Press claims to have the answer. According to sources close to Netflix, the company simply underestimated how long it would take to convert customers over to a streaming only future, and was stuck with a business model that simply couldn't keep up with their long term goals.

This starts to make sense when you consider that Netflix dropped over $406 million into streaming rights for its online library last year, and these fees are expect to climb to over $1.4 billion next year. With such a massive investment required to continue building up its online catalogue, you can start to appreciate why it might want to split off the two business units when the cost of handling physical media continues to rise as well.

20 million users would be a real accomplishment, but that's nothing compared to Facebook's 750 million worldwide users. By adding hints of Google+ throughout the Google ecosystem, the search giant is hoping to hook users and encourage them to invite their friends. Games For Windows Dead Consumed By Xboxcom

Oh, Microsoft, why have you abandoned PC gamers? Don't get us wrong, Age of Empires Online looks awesome, but the company's almost complete lack of PC gaming news at this year's E3 left a bitter taste in our mouths, and Microsoft's been conspicuously silent on the PC front ever since -- until now.

Lower your heads and mourn, PC gamers. The continuously half-baked Games for Windows disappears on July 11th, swallowed by the all-consuming console-centric blob that is the Xbox brand. While many gamers might just shrug and go back to the free Team Fortress 2 action on Steam, ditching Games for Windows is sure to irritate PC fanatics who hate the encroaching tentacles of Xbox Live. On its end, Microsoft's Games for Windows website says "Games for Windows Marketplace will fully transition over to Xbox.com. Now you can get all of your gaming needs in one place. It's convenient, it's concentrated, and it's a whole lot of great games." We're all for convenience, but we can't help but wonder when Microsoft will stop trying to shoehorn PC gamers and console...

NBA Erases Player Images from Websites Face Stiff Fines for Facebook

In case you're not a sports a fan, or at least not a fan of the NBA, here's the prerequisite information you need before reading ahead.

The NBA and the NBA Players Association failed to hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement last week to replace the one that expired, and the NBA decided to lock out its players, forcing a work stoppage. What's interesting about this, and relevant from a technology perspective, is that webmasters had to remove all images and videos of NBA players from team websites, almost as if the players no longer exist.According to ESPN, depending on you interpret "fair use," teams could get in trouble just for mentioning a player's name on an NBA-owned website, though different teams interpret this stipulation differently. Plenty of other gray areas abound, such as social networking. Yahoo News is reporting that team owners who communicate with players using social media tools like Facebook and Twitter face a million dollar fine from the league, as well as potential loss of draft picks. The ban on Facebook extends beyond team owners and also includes coaches, managers, and front office personnel.

Asking if astronauts play online games in space no doubt had the parents chuckling in a somewhat embarrassed fashion, but the fact that our modern space fleet has to make do with so little bandwidth is certainly an interesting bit of trivia. IM Showdown 2011 Four Chat Clients Face Off

Ding! Ding! Ding ding ding! We've come a long way since the early days of America Online, a time when instant messaging was but a one-ISP fad and that unnatural blast of noise from your sound card was the run-to-the-living-room signal that a new message awaited.

When you set up an account with Digsby, your account settings for the various services the program supports will follow you wherever you happen to install the application. That includes a portable option that can even install a self-contained version of Digsby on a USB key. One of the first things you'll notice about actually using Digsby is the ads. California Passes Online Sales Tax Bill Amazon Not Pleased

Remember yesterday when we told you of the horrible dystopian future California faced as they considered forcing online retailers to collect state sales tax? Well, they're going ahead with it, causing an outcry from Internet retail giants including Amazon and Overstock. The change goes into effect Friday.

In conjunction with the move, the state's tax rate is going down 1-point to 7.75%. The California law takes advantage of the affiliate programs that many sites run where people can get commissions by referring buyers to a site. The law in California now considers those people employees of a sort. In response, Amazon and Overstock have cancelled their affiliate programs in the state....
