Sony has introduced five new Cyber-shot model cameras to the US market, each with high optical zoom and HD video recording capability. Ranging in price from $480 to $250, the cameras are said by Sony to be ideal for travel photography and everyday snapshots or videos. The higher end models offer up to 30x optical zoom, embedded GPS and Full HD recording, while the budget models feature 16x zoom and 720p video among other features....

ZTE has confirmed that the Orbit should be the first Windows Phone with NFC. Both the booth display and zpokespeople confirmed both to The Verge and Electronista that it would have the short-range wireless when carriers ask for it. Specific use cases weren't outlined, although providers' requests could point to mobile payments....

There seems to be something new on the ultrabook front almost everyday, with the ultrabook models that were announced at last month's Consumer Electronics Show now hitting store shelves one by one. Lenovo's IdeaPad U300e, one of several models showcased by the vendor at CES, is the latest, having gone up for for pre-order on the company's website. Hit the jump for more.

A new report from the Wall Street Journal is shedding some light on recent rumors that Googlers have been testing a mysterious entertainment device in their homes. According to WSJ, we can expect a system that can wireless stream music throughout the home, and will be marketed under the Google name. This would be a completely consumer-oriented device built in-house, a first for Mountain View.�
The system does not have a name anyone is willing to mention yet, but there are hints that Google will be using Android as the base of the system. Past devices like the Google TV and Nexus phones have been built with partners, but this new streaming device will be all Google. Sources say that the system will be controlled via smartphones and tablets, and that leads many to suspect an Android@Home tie in. Android@Home was a home automaton service demoed at Google I/O 2011.
At long last, Motorola's Droid 4 smartphone with slide-out QWERTY keyboard is available at Verizon. Motroloa's newest smartphone runs $200 with a two-year service contract and includes free overnight shipping if ordered direct from Verizon, or $550 sans contract. It's been a long wait for those who've been holding out for this particular phone, which was first rumored to drop on December 8, 2011.
It's here now and it brings a dual-core 1.2GHz processor to the Android party. It also has a 4-inch qHD display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage supplemented with a microSD card slot, 8MP rear-facing camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the aforementioned slide-out QWERTY plank with five rows of keys.

The breakup between Acer and its former Chief Executive Officer, Gianfranco Lanci, was mildy tense, but swift and free of any drama when the two parted ways almost a year ago. And it probably would have stayed that way too, except Lanci accepted a gig with Lenovo, a move that prompted Acer to file a lawsuit in Italy for an alleged breache of a non-compete clause Lanci signed with his former company.
Acer brought Lanci on board in 1997. Over the course of the next decade and beyond, Lanci proved instrumental in Acer's rise to the near top. But things came to a head when he and Acer's board disagreed on a product strategy in the emerging mobile handset landscape, and specifically the amount of focus that should be put on smartphones and tablets.

The next version of Microsoft's popular office suite, codenamed Office 15, on Monday entered the technical preview phase, allowing a select group of NDA-bound customers to test early builds of the software suite and provide valuable feedback in the process. The launch of the Office 15 Technical Preview Program, a significant development milestone, was announced by PJ Hough, CVP of Development in Microsoft's Office Division, in a post on the Office blogs site.
``At this early point in our development cycle, I'm not able to share too much about Office 15, but I can tell you Office 15 is the most ambitious undertaking yet for the Office Division. With Office 15, for the first time ever, we will simultaneously update our cloud services, servers, and mobile and PC clients for Office, Office 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Project, and Visio. The hardest part about watching a nerd fight is knowing which side to root for. Such is the position we find ourselves in as two security giants squabble over claims the other is making. What started the whole thing was Symantec telling Reuters in an interview earlier this week that it was snatching up antivirus market share from competitor McAfee.
Not only does McAfee refute Symantec's claim, the security firm points out it conducted a record level of business during its December quarter, during which time it secured its biggest deal ever and added more sales exceeding $1 million than it had in any other quarter to date.
We always expect Apple to post big quarterly numbers, but the sheer volume of cash Apple made last quarter almost defies description. The Cupertino-based maker of iDevices has announced that it pulled in $46.3 billion in revenue for Fiscal Q1 2012, the period that ended December 31. That is nearly double the 2011 value.
When all the costs were figured in, Apple made a record $13.06 billion in profit, which works out to $13.87 per-share. Much of this windfall came from the launch of the iPhone 4S early in the quarter; in all 37.04 million of the devices were sold. The company's other products didn't fare poorly either. The iPad moved over 15 million units, and the Mac sold 5.2 million. iPods are still charting over 15 million units as well.
We've almost completely given up discussing Ubisoft DRM here at Maximum PC, and with good reason. Just about every PC release seems to ship with some draconian and insanely punishing copy protection mechanism designed to drive paying customers insane. Anno 2070 was no different, releasing with an activation system that limited you to a total of 3 lifetime activations, ohh and upgrading your video card, as discovered by Guru3D, counts against this total.
After briefly toying with the idea of completely excluding all future Ubisoft titles from graphics card benchmarks, Guru3D did the right thing, and decided only by reporting on the issues would any action ever be taken to improve the situation. Thanks in no small part of their efforts, Ubisoft has lightened up a bit on its restrictions, now allowing users to upgrade graphics cards without triggering an additional activation.�...
Snapstream, a company that offers a hardware-based TV broadcast monitoring server and integrated software, has released a Mac version of its web player, letting Mac users search, view and save clips on various subjects. The Mac version, a first for the company, is limited compared to its Windows counterpart but is expected to gain support for additional browsers, video formats and playback options over time.
