Motorola Sued Over the Use of Xoom Trademark

Motorola Sued Over the Use of Xoom Trademark

The Motorola Xoom has only been on store shelves since Thursday, but Google’s new flagship tablet is already facing off against a challenger even more menacing than the iPad, the US legal system. A new trademark infringement lawsuit has been filed by Xoom Corp, a money-transfer business which has been in operation since 2003, and they would like to see sales of the new tablet halted pending a formal trial.

Court documents filed in a California District Court show that Xoom Corp does in-fact own the trade name “Xoom”, and the company claims Motorola is misleading customers by making them think it is endorsed by the money-transfer firm. I think it’s safe to say that piggy backing off of the Xoom Corp name wasn’t Motorola’s intent, but given that they only filed for use of the name in October 26th 2010, they certainly have a bit of explaining to do. For a court to agree to a temporary restraining order on sales of the new tablet, Xoom Corp will need...

Sony Dash Review

We mentioned the Sony Dash in the January/February issue of Maximum Tech, but we're long overdue in presenting a more in-depth look at this Chumby device.

If you're not familiar with the Chumby, check out our previous coverage of the Chumby One and Best Buy's Infocast.Sony's take on the Internet Appliance features a seven-inch, 800-by-480 pixel capacitive touch-screen that's much larger screen than the Chumby One, and slightly smaller than the Infocast. As with those devices, it's capable of connecting to your 802.11b/g wireless network with up to WPA2 encryption. You can download and install most Chumby apps, including Facebook and Twitter, directly onto the Dash without having to use your PC first. We dig the Dash's wide-screen display, its small footprint, and the fact that it's capable of streaming video from...

Microsoft Feeling Windows Phone Update Woes

Microsoft took great pains to talk up the ease of the Windows Phone update process when announcing the OS. It was their intention to draw a clear distinction between WP7, and the haphazard Android update process. Despite what we can only assume is their best effort, some serious issues are cropping up with this first small update.

A number of Samsung phones appear to have trouble downloading and installing the update, which is provided through the Zune software. The devices reported an error code , and became inoperable. We should point out that it is believed only a small number of phones were affected. However, it was enough that Microsoft has pulled the update while they search for the problem.

The previous "Spring 2011" timeframe for Flash to rollout was not sitting well apparently. On the Adobe blog, The company posted that it will be just a few weeks until Flash 10.2 is ready for tablets.

When the code is done, it will go out as an OTA update for some tablets. The Xoom is specifically mentioned here. But we are also told that some Honeycomb tablets will have Flash pre-installed out of the box. It is clear that Adobe is hoping to head off any fears that the anointed Google tablet OS will be languishing without Flash.
