What Was the Biggest Internet Outage of 2010

If anything, 2010 was the year when our reliance on web technology went through the roof.

And as our usage went up, so did our expectations of uptime and reliability -- as evidenced by the near-panic that set in as these 10 services went (temporarily) down.

University To Banks Stick Your Censorship

It feels as if everyone has told bankers where to get off in the past couple of years.

Thats certainly the case with a letter written by Cambridge University, though this time its not a criticism of irresponsible lending and investment. Instead Britains banks have been told to go whistle after demanding that a students thesis be censored.

Hackers obtain PS3 private cryptography key due to epic programming fail video

The 27th annual Chaos Communication Conference already hacked encrypted GSM calls with a $15 cellphone, but there was a second surprise in store this morn -- the souls who unlocked the Nintendo Wii's homebrew potential (and defended it time and again) claim to have broken into the PlayStation 3 as well.

Last we left the black monolith, Sony had won a round, forcing the community to downgrade their firmware for any hope at hacking into the console

1TB Platters Will Lead to Much Bigger Hard Drives in 2011

We're still waiting for solid state drive pricing to fall to pedestrian levels in terms of price-per-gigabyte, but in the meantime, those capacious mechanical hard drives just keep getting bigger. While the industry tries to sort out booting from large capacity hard drives on the desktop, it's the notebook segment that stands to really benefit from 1TB platters.

According to the IDC's figures, some 22 percent of notebooks already sport 500GB hard drives, while 500GB models are expected to account for 35-40 percent of total 2.5-inch shipments in 2011. As the year goes on, look for 640GB, 750GB, and 1TB hard drives to show up in high end laptops, DigiTimes says.

Netbook pricing may be getting desperate to combat iPad

Netbook prices are dropping to the point where cost is increasingly the only factor in trying to stave off tablets like the iPad, industry observers said Monday night.

Using prices in the netbook field's Taiwanese home turf as an example, a 10-inch, single-core ASUS Eee PC had been cut to a relatively low $288 to create a wider price gap with tablets while most others were down to $339. Even attempts by ASUS to keep features up weren't working in Digitimes' checks, as the dual-core Eee PC 1015PEM was still down to $407.......

Majority of LateTwentysomethings Use Cell Phones Only

Cnet is reporting that the latest survey of 17,619 households by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has resulted in some surprising results regarding phone usage. For the first time, the majority of adults in their late 20s are more likely to use only a mobile phone at home. In all, 51% of those age 25-29 did not have a landline at home. Landlines just aren't hip anymore, apparently.

The numbers are also on the rice for those in other age groups. 40% of people in the 18-24 age bracket have left landlines behind. As you might expect, the rate of cell phone only homes drops significantly as age goes up. After age 65, only 5% of people said they lived in mobile only homes. The overall rate of households that used only cell phones was 26%, and another 16% said they talk all or most of their calls on their mobile phone.

According to Microsoft, Motorola breached contractual obligations made to standards organizations for "reasonable and non-discriminatory terms and conditions" for patents dealing with wireless and video-encoding technologies. Microsoft described the patent royalties as "wholly disproportionate to the royalty rate that its patents should command under any reasonable calculus."...

Android 23 Gingerbread Source Code Released

This morning, Google released the source code for the newest Android platform update, Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The source code is available from the Android Open Source Repository now. Engadget reports that Google is asking interested parties to wait several hours to download the new code to balance out server loads.Android 2.3 is the software version shipping on the new Nexus S that launched yesterday. Now that the software code is open, ROM modders will be hard at work incorporating it into their ROMs. The ROMs that have so far been made are ports from the Gingerbread SDK, and tend to be very slow. Additionally, now that the code is open, many hardware manufacturers will start working on their phone updates in earnest.

Hennessey Venom GT Breathes Fire On The Dyno video

You've followed it for years, seen the official teasers, the reveal, and even watched Jay Leno give it the once-over.

Now you can see the Hennessey Venom GT breathe fire on the dyno in this brief video. Why, exactly, does it shoot three feet of blue flame out of its exhaust, you ask? Good question...

Rumor Best Buy in Hot Water for Selling Phones Too Cheaply

If you wander into your local Best Buy store hoping to walk out with Motorola Droid 2 Global, or Droid Pro, you could be in for disappointment. According to Engadget, Verizon is mightily displeased that Best Buy knocked to two-year contract price of the Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro down to $100 and $50 respectively. This reportedly violated an agreement the company had with Verizon.

All the units of these two phones are being pulled from shelves now, and Verizon won't even activate them even if you could get Best Buy to sell you one. If you ask Best Buy, this is being called a "recall". How civil. We can understand Verizon's desire to keep the price on new phones higher, but they rake in more money from the two-year agreement than they ever would from the upfront price. So what if Verizon stores miss a few sales? Something seems fishy here. Anyone care to guess at just what is going on?...

Paramount Bringing Enhanced Movie Apps to Windows Phone 7

Paramount has announced that it will release 10 new apps for Windows Phone 7, each one will be a so-called "enhanced app" for a particular feature film. These apps will be built on Microsoft's Silverlight technology ad will include the full feature length film. The forst apps out of the gate will be School of Rock, Zoolander, Waiting for Superman, and GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. More movie apps will be launched in the near future.

There are still some unknowns. First and foremost it price. Paramount has not announced how much they will be charging for these apps. Second, we don't know if the content in this app will be usable on any other devices, or with a larger screen. The apps appear to only be for playback on the phone, but could perhaps be expanded to other platforms in the future. If the apps are too expensive and rigid, we can't see this being a sustainable method of content distribution.

Exploding Droid 2 Didn039t Was Dropped Says Moto

You may remember the flurry of interest in the apparent exploding Motorola Droid 2 last week. A user claimed that while talking on his Droid 2, the device's glass screen blew outward, cutting his ear. After some investigation, Motorola has told PC Magazine that this phone does not appear to have exploded at all. Rather, it was dropped. They surmise that the user did not notice the glass around the earpiece had been make sharp by the aforementioned dropping.

It's hard to say why this story had such legs. It might just be that we're all secretly wondering if our phones are out to get us. No one is saying the consumer was intentionally trying to mislead anyone. Perhaps he just jumped to conclusions. Moto's investigation pointed out that the only components in the phone that could explode, would render the device unusable, but this phone still works. It is not unheard of that a battery could be damaged and go up in flames, but there is nothing volatile near the earpiece....

FDA Says Wicked Lasers Manufacturing Process Stinks

You may remember Wicked Lasers as the company that will sell you a laser with an emitter that looks like a lightsaber hilt. Oh, and the laser is strong enough to destroy your eyeballs, but that's still safer than a real lightsaber. Safe is a relative term though, and the FDA is the agency responsible for determining what is safe. The agency has sent Wicked Lasers a letter saying that it "disapproves the quality control and testing program for all laser products." Bummer.

The company now has the customary 15 days to refute the claim, ask the FDA for a reasonable exemption, or explain how it has fixed things. Wicked Lasers will also have to provide the FDA with a list of all the products they sell in the US. These high-power lasers are technically legal, but the import situation has always been a little shady. This action could be the first step in government action to ban the devices. They were previously on "import alert" delaying shipments....
